What Holy Spirit Gave Me

During Catholic Schools Week, we not only celebrate our students, faculty, coaches and parents, but our awesome alumni, too! Today, three young alumni from the Classes of 2012, 2014 & 2016 share what their Catholic education at Holy Spirit gave them, and a peek at what they are doing today.

"Holy Spirit gave me the opportunity to explore my interests and discover the values and passions that continue to guide me each day. The experiences I had at Holy Spirit - everything from playing flute on stage and trying mock trial cases in the courtroom to working on various service projects and science fair projects - gave me the confidence and ability to dive even deeper into my passions in college. These experiences prepared me to be an engineering student at the Robertson Institute at Duke University. I was fortunate to spend most of last summer performing mission work in Kenya working with the local families to obtain clean water. We designed and built water filtration systems for their homes while sharing our faith and goodwill.
Most importantly, Holy Spirit gave me an incredible community of people to share these experiences with: teammates, teachers, mentors, and friends for life."

"Holy Spirit gave me the opportunity to succeed in everything I do. I was given a chance to play on championship sports teams, make lifelong friends and memories I will never forget, become an active member of my community, and succeed in the classroom. I credit my Holy Spirit education for my acceptance into medical school straight out of high school, ability to do research on artificial sand dunes, involvement in the community, work ethic both in and out of class, and Christian values. More than just an education, social life, and sports, Holy Spirit gave me a second home....a home where I was surrounded by a family made up of friends, coaches, and teachers who cared about me as a person and wanted to see me succeed at everything I did. This is why Holy Spirit will always hold a special place in my heart."

"Holy Spirit gave me the opportunity and tools I needed to attend college on an academic and athletic scholarship. I was able to learn and grow as an individual with some of the best teachers, coaches, teammates and friends anyone could ask for. Being a Spartan academically and athletically prepared me to tackle challenges without fear or hesitation. Winning back-to-back state football championships with my fellow Spartans gave me the drive and motivation to always push for more. I am grateful for my time at Holy Spirit and cherish the friendships and memories I have made there."

"Holy Spirit gave me the educational foundation I needed in order to be successful in college. The AP courses and science electives I took better prepared me for the course load I had in undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of New Haven (UNH). I graduated from UNH with two Bachelor's degrees, Forensic Science and Biology, and I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Forensic Technology, which is the only program of it's kind in the country. The core values: honor, loyalty, courage, and honesty, which I developed at Holy Spirit have taught me to strive for perfection, to pursue my dreams, and to stand up for what I believe in. If I did not attend Holy Spirit High School, I am not sure where I would be today."

"Holy Spirit gave me the encouragement, faith and values to believe in myself, and go after my dreams. My teachers were not only there to help me, they understood and supported my individual academic interests and passions. My love for history, music and drama were solidified at Holy Spirit. While a History major at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington DC, I earned an internship in the Office of the Historian of the US House of Representatives. Conducting research in the Library of Congress, working closely with professional historians, and handling treasured National Archives took confidence. Confidence I gained at Holy Spirit. Now a CUA graduate student pursuing a Masters degree in Theater History and Criticism, I am working with students and professionals on historical theater productions. Holy Spirit instilled in me faith in myself and God, and gave me the confidence to pursue my dream."
