Art Department

This course operates within an academic and discipline based Art Education format focusing on the following components: Studio, Art History, Criticism, and Aesthetics. Emphasis is placed on development, problem solving, and communication in the fine arts. Students explore fundamental technical skills of drawing and two-dimensional design. Experiences include: drawing from observation, critical reflection activities, and masterwork studies. Studio curriculum focuses on a foundation of art elements, figure ground studies, analytical drawings, some color experiences, and drawing from life.
 
Students are required to prepare a portfolio of work that demonstrates fundamental concerns in the visual arts.
 
This course operates within an academic and discipline based Art Education format focusing on the following components: Studio, Art History, Criticism, and Aesthetics. Emphasis is placed on portfolio development, problem solving, critical thinking, visual, verbal and written communication in the fine arts. Students explore fundamental conceptual and technical skills of drawing and two-dimensional design. Experiences include: analysis and synthesis through research and observation, written and verbal reflection activities, masterwork and thematic studies, aesthetic perception and judgment. Studio curriculum is based on a foundation program of art elements, figure ground studies, analytical drawings, some color experiences, and drawing from life.
 
Students are required to prepare a portfolio of work that demonstrates their ability to deal with the fundamental concerns of the visual arts. Admission is pending approval of artwork and art test.
 
This course operates within an academic and discipline based Art Education format. It begins with a review of skills and concepts. Second year art students focus on advanced drawing skills, principles of organization, theory, and larger visual conceptualization processes. Projects emphasize both formal and experiential approaches to solutions and include more long term ventures. Long term projects stress color theory, visual thinking, and the need to fully utilize, coordinate, and relate all elements, principles, and theories to one effect, in order to communicate strongly and effectively and to fully realize ideas. Portfolio preparation continues for all students. Students seeking a career in the arts further refine Art I portfolios in preparation for admission to colleges and universities.
 
Successful completion of Art I is required and a “B” average is recommended.
 
This course is for students who intend to pursue a career in the visual arts and are interested in advanced study. Art III is designed for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in gaining practical experience in art and have demonstrated a high level of competence in Art II. Art III operates within an academic and discipline based Art Education format. Third year art students focus on the development of a more concentrated body of work based on individual interest in a particular idea. Emphasis is placed on work produced through self-directed study, as well as through solutions to class projects. Advanced portfolio preparation continues for all students. Students conduct research, prepare writings for and about art, and explore advanced concepts in Studio Art, Criticism, Aesthetics and Art History. Strong drawing, conceptual, and problem solving skills are required to work on art projects outside of the classroom.
 
Successful completion of Advanced Art II is required and a “B” average is recommended. Submission of a portfolio and a subjective analysis essay is required for departmental review.  
 
This course is for students who intend to pursue a career in the visual arts and who are interested in further advanced study. Art IV is designed for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in gaining practical experience in art and have demonstrated a high level of competence in Art III. Art IV operates within an academic and discipline based Art Education format. Students conduct research in studio art and art history, prepare writings for and about art, and explore honors level concepts and skills in studio art. Highly evolved drawing, conceptual, technical and problem solving skills are required for this class. In addition to assigned homework, students are required to work on art projects outside of the classroom. Fourth year art student’s focus on the development of a fundamental competence and range of understanding in visual concerns and methods. Students refine their concentration and breadth of work, to produce a unified, encompassing vision in an artistic composition. Emphasis is placed on works produced through individual interest and self-directed study, as well as through solutions to class projects. Advanced portfolio preparation continues for all students.
