🌟 Spartan Spotlight: Honoring Mr. Woody Dixon 🌟

A proud member of the Class of 1984, Woody has given his heart and soul to this community—as a coach, mentor, and guide to countless young men and women across South Jersey. For decades, he has trained, inspired, and challenged athletes and students, always leading with integrity, compassion, and a relentless commitment to doing what is right.

Woody has been more than a coach—he has been a pillar of the Spartan community. Respected, admired, and deeply loved, he has set the highest standards for our students while supporting them with unwavering care. His influence extends far beyond the field or court; it reaches into the very character of those he has taught and mentored.

His legacy is not measured in wins or records but in the lives he has touched, the values he has instilled, and the enduring spirit of excellence he leaves behind.

On behalf of our entire school community, we offer our deepest gratitude and best wishes to Mr. Woody Dixon.

"Once a Spartan, always a Spartan". Best of luck, Woody—you will always have a home here at Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit High School Kicks Off The Spartan Way

Last week, kicking off our Spartan Way speaker series, alumnus Bill Reynolds ’91, Atlantic County Prosecutor, spoke to our students and inspired them with lessons on leadership, commitment, integrity, and the traits of strong leaders: authenticity, character, accountability, honesty, servanthood, and humility. He also shared the “Three Cs”—Culture, Compete, Compassion—and emphasized core values like gratitude, humility, and presence. Prosecutor Reynolds has been instrumental in helping create this new program at Spirit over the past year, and we have been blessed to utilize his knowledge and leadership in putting it into action.

Today, Bill Elliott will be visiting Holy Spirit High School to present the HERO Campaign, a program focused on making safe and responsible choices. Students will explore themes of Perseverance, Mental Toughness, and Grit, learning how to overcome challenges, stay resilient, and develop the strength to make positive decisions in their lives.

The college visits on campus have officially begun! Our first visit of the year was with Florida Southern College.

College visits at Holy Spirit provide students with a unique opportunity to learn more about prospective schools right here on campus. During these visits, college representatives share important information about academic programs, campus life, admissions requirements, and financial aid. Students can ask questions, gather materials, and get a feel of what each college offers, helping them make informed decisions about their future school.

We look forward to welcoming many more colleges this year and encourage our students to explore all their options as they prepare for the next step in their academic journey.

Holy Spirit High School Students Participate in “See You at the Pole” for the First Time

Today, students at Holy Spirit High School gathered for their first-ever participation in See You at the Pole™ (SYATP), a global day of student prayer. This annual event, held on the fourth Wednesday of September, invites students around the world to meet at their school’s flagpole before classes begin to lift up their schools, communities, and nations in prayer.

See You at the Pole™ began in 1990 with just ten students praying at their school in Texas. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement, with millions of students taking part each year. The event is student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led, focusing solely on the power and importance of prayer.

At Holy Spirit, the event was coordinated by our Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) group and was open to all students and staff. The morning began with an opening prayer led by Father Nilsen. A Scripture passage was read aloud followed by students forming small prayer groups to pray over friends, families, teachers, their school, and our nation.

Last week, the Holy Spirit High School community came together for a powerful and prayerful moment — our first all-school Mass of the year.

Traditionally celebrated as a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, this special liturgy calls on the Spirit’s guidance for our students, staff, and entire school family. It reminds us that as we begin this new school year, we do so not alone, but filled with the Spirit — ready to grow in faith, wisdom, and purpose.

This Mass also marked the launch of our September Leadership Focus on Identity — a reminder that “A Spartan never forgets who they are.” As we explore Self-awareness and a Christ-centered identity, we are invited to reflect on who we are, Whose we are, and how we are called to live with purpose each day.

Here’s to a year filled with the Holy Spirit, rooted in faith, and led by identity. Let’s go, Spartans!

Integrating Hallow in the Classroom!

As part of our ongoing mission to strengthen our Catholic identity, we’re excited to be integrating the Hallow App throughout our school community! 🙏

From one-minute opening prayers to guided meditations before tests, teachers across all subjects are using Hallow to help students connect faith with daily learning. Even small, consistent moments of prayer can make a big impact!

Here's how we're bringing Hallow to life:

Students and teachers are incorporating short reflections and meditations into daily routines.

Theology classes are planning “Login Days” to get students started with the app.

Families can access Hallow at home with our login instruction cards.

Fun classroom activities like Hallow Bingo and a Scavenger Hunt are helping students explore the app in meaningful ways.

We’re excited to see how Hallow will continue to support spiritual growth in our school!

At Holy Spirit High School our students are engaging in what they know as "Forge Time". What is Forge Time? Forge Time is a pattern during the morning three times a week where students are engaged with either an activity, service program, leadership program, club, guest speakers or career and college counseling. In these pictures students are participating in our E-Sports program and our seniors are reviewing the Common App with our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Mark Reardon.

FAA Aviation Monthly Mentoring Program – Student Recognition

We are proud to recognize several of our students for being selected to participate in the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center’s Aviation Monthly Mentoring Program (AMMP).

This program brings together students from 13 area high schools to explore careers in the fields of Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math (STEM) through immersive aviation experiences. Over the course of the school year, participants will rotate once or twice a month through various FAA laboratories, engaging directly with aviation professionals and exploring cutting-edge career paths.

Through AMMP, students will gain hands-on experiences such as:

● Working with cockpit simulators
● Participating in high-fidelity air traffic control simulations
● Observing small and full-scale fire testing
● Learning about the federal mission and future opportunities in aviation

We are thrilled that the following students will represent our school in this exciting program:
Caitlin Eucogcan, Gabe Nell, Olivia Malinsky, Marissa Jones, and Chanthal Sanchez

Congratulations to these students on earning this incredible opportunity! Thank you to Ms. Ljoka for getting this up and
running this year for us!

See You at the Pole - Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

See You at the Pole (TM) is a global day of student prayer that began in 1990 with just ten students gathering at their school flagpole. Today, millions of students around the world join together on the fourth Wednesday of September to pray on their campuses. This event is student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led. It is a simple prayer rally where students meet at the flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God. Many groups sing worship songs, read Scripture, or share testimonies before breaking into small groups for prayer. The focus is always on one thing—prayer.

This year, our FCA group, along with any students and staff who would like to join, will participate in See You at the Pole(TM) for the first time here at Holy Spirit. We plan to begin with an opening prayer, followed by a Scripture passage.

A message from Father Nilsen - Catholic Ministry This Sunday, September 14th, is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a reminder for us as Catholics of the Cross of Christ, as well as the “crosses” we have in our own lives. The crosses we have in our lives can be struggles with sin, an addiction, a difficult health or family situation....it can take on many forms. But, we are called not to lose hope, but to stand steadfast and close to the Lord in those times. Even Jesus himself had to hand over his Cross on the way to Calvary. We hand over our Cross through prayer, through trust and hope in the Lord, in the Sacraments, most especially Confession and the Eucharist. Around the school, I am sure you’ve taken notice of the cross that is rooted in an anchor. It’s a reminder that we are to be anchored in Christ in all that we do and are, and always turn to Him and rely on Him.

In Remembrance: 9/11 & Honoring a Spartan Hero

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience shown by so many in the face of unimaginable tragedy. As a Catholic school community, we pray for peace in our world, comfort for those who continue to carry the weight of grief, and hope rooted in Christ’s promise of eternal life.

Among the heroes of that day was one of our own — John O'Neill, Holy Spirit High School Class of 1970, Hall of Fame member, former FBI agent, and, at the time, head of security at the World Trade Center in New York City.

John knew from a young age that he was called to serve. He was determined to work in special services for the U.S. government, and is remembered by many as an exceptional gentleman: highly intelligent, quiet, dignified, and deeply committed to his goals.

On the morning of 9/11, John was on duty at the World Trade Center. He died while courageously assisting firefighters in the effort to save others. His bravery and selflessness exemplify the highest ideals of service and sacrifice.

A permanent tribute to John’s life and legacy — including a memorial and twisted steel beams from the Twin Towers — can be found on the Ventnor Boardwalk, in the town where he grew up.

We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones on this solemn anniversary. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all Spartans.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Reflecting on a Powerful Board Retreat Experience

This past Saturday, members of our Holy Spirit High School Board and school directors came together for a focused and inspiring retreat led by Kevin Quinn, of Partners in Mission. The session was more than just a presentation — it offered each of us a deeper understanding of our individual roles and how we can better collaborate to bring out the greatest potential and strengths of Holy Spirit High School.

Board Chair Mara Marczyk shared:
“When we take the time to invest in our mission, our people, and our purpose, the results speak for themselves. Putting in the work always leads to greater achievements, and I want to express my sincere appreciation for everyone’s presence, engagement, and ongoing commitment to the success of our school.”

As we celebrate our 100th graduating class, Holy Spirit High School remains committed to moving forward with confidence and unity — guided by the belief that our shared efforts today will shape a stronger tomorrow.

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt

As we wrap up the first week of school, our hearts are full.
We are grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to educate, guide, and walk alongside these young individuals as they begin another chapter in their journey.

At Holy Spirit, we don’t just teach academics — we nurture hearts, minds, and spirits, grounded in faith and purpose.

Our September theme is Identity & Purpose — encouraging our students to discover who they are and who they are called to be.

These photos reflect the energy, joy, and community of our first week back — students reconnecting, learning, growing, and living out what it means to be part of the Spartan family.

Here’s to a year of building confidence, character, and connection — The Spartan Way.
